Scribepost for January 20, 2009

Today in math we did Number of the Day.

Number of the day is an activity which helps us learn certain math skills, such as dividing and rounding, finding the exponent of a number, expanded notation, expanded form (similar yet different from expanded notation), prime factors and various other important math skills.

We played a math game that requires you to find the decimal and fractional equivalent of other fractions and decimals. We were given cards with an answer to another card and a question.

eg. Someone asked to find the Decimal equivalent of 1/4, so Brendan read his card and said that he had 0.25.

The game also required us to find pictorial representations of proper fractions, mixed fractions, and decimals.

eg. The student teacher had a card and the question asked who had a pictorial representation of 3/4 and I had the answer card.

We also did some textbook work. The work we did involved the measures of central tendency; range and outlier.

Range: The difference you get when you subtract the two end numbers in a data set.

eg. 11, 14, 25, 43, 45 / 45-11= 34

Outlier: The number(s) that are either the smallest or the largest in the data set.

eg. 2, 27, 43, 51, 65, 69/ the outlier is 2

I pick John as the next scribe. Good luck....

You did a good job at explaining what we did in class, very good! I also liked how you used colours for the important words. The only misstake I saw was on the range eg you put 45-11=35 when it equals 34.
But still excellent work!

Good job you did a good job explaining everything. You also put examples in which was good. 1 thing though outlier is the number that is diffrent from the other numbers (either much larger from the other numbers or much lower).

i think that the outlier is the number that stands out the most.
it can be the smallest number or the biggest number
